Miss Margarita /// LIFESTYLE

Located on the main strip of Jonson Street in Byron Bay, this Mexican eatery has it all, beachside location included!

Vibrant colours and patterns are interwoven into the interior with shabby chic, central american inspired furnishings. An impressive tile installation by Jai Vasicek, of Ahoy Trader features in the main dining room, with Frida Kahlo and skull motifs gazing down from the walls.

Come here to start your morning with post surf coffee and a breakfast burrito. Or drift in later in the day for a feast of nachos, tacos, or burritos with Margarita in hand.

In This Street, The Age /// EDITORIAL

"On a daily basis our life, our passions, our business - it's all glued together. What we do at the end of the day is we create, we make, we set up an environment for ourselves."

David Bromley and fashion designer partner Yuge Yu came up with the idea of a joint retail venture after their home was burgled, writes Anneli Knight.

Blackman Studio, The Design Files /// EDITORIAL

"Charles Blackman is one of Australia’s greatest living artists. Now 86, Blackman’s most prolific days are behind him, but two of his children have joined forces with a vision to celebrate and produce new artifact collections that reframe his extraordinary legacy.

Under the direction of Bertie and Felix Blackman, The Blackman Studio offers a contemporary re-imagining of the iconic work of Charles Blackman."

COCKATOO MAN

~

“When I was growing up in Timor Leste, we had a pet cockatoo. He would copy everyone and follow us when we went out on the farm.”

“I was 19 when I came to Darwin. There were 18 of us who came on a little fishing boat. I was the captain and we made it as refugees across the ocean.”

“I have a good life here in Darwin but it’s hard to be away from my family in Timor. I miss them a lot.”

“Paulie is a part of my family now, like my little brother. He can come anywhere with me.”

“Paulie likes bike riding and music! We ride down to Nightcliff every afternoon. People always smile at us and say we are exercising NT-style.”

“Paulie is very friendly but he can be a bit cheeky too. Sometimes he likes to pull our dog’s tail and hassle her.”

"Paulie can say a few words - Hello, how's it going? bye-bye, I love you, water and our names."

Michael Pugh /// In The Studio

Set amongst the treetops - Michael Pugh & his wife Janey Pugh built this lofty, stilted studio in their backyard, which just happens to be a tropical rainforest. The couple have been living in Buderim for over 40 years now, having raised their family here. Now in it's 3rd incarnation, they built the studio themselves with bamboo grown on the property.

Michael is a self-taught potter, originally working with wild clays dug out from the middle of the earth - hence the studio name - not Lord of the Rings! He now works with white stone ware clay - emblazoned with his signature motifs and vibrant colours.

George Raftopoulos /// In the studio

Mad, passionate, active, occasionally funny, driven.

Whilst visiting David and Yuge at their Melbourne studio I had the pleasure of capturing George's rapid fire creativity in action. Bold and confident colour splashed around as he created a series of works in preparation for the opening of Bromley & Co's retail and gallery space in Windsor.

You can see more of George's work here: http://www.georgeraftopoulos.com/

Porcelain Bear /// In the Studio

Designers Gregory Bonasera and Anthony Raymond are the beards & masterminds behind Porcelain Bear. This talented duo have combined 3D product technology with the porcelain ceramic tradition to produce a beautiful collection of lighting, tableware and furniture pieces. Take a peek inside their showroom, based in Collingwood, Melbourne.

Dean Bowen /// In the Studio

Tucked in the back streets of Moorabin's industrial area, nestled between car mechanics and metal workers is Dean Bowen's studio. Once through the door you step into a space filled with colour and the quirky characters that populate Dean's extensive body of work. Giant sculpture moulds and miniature maquettes, glistening oils, and delicate prints. Dean eagerly shows me through the space he has worked in for the last 12 years now. As he prepares to move onto a new bigger and better space, here is a time capsule of his home away from home.

You can view more of Dean's wonderful work at the Port Jackson Press Print Room in Smith Street, or online at www.deanbowen.com

Make Poverty History /// Zero Seven Projection

In 2007, Make Poverty History trained and mobilised 700 ambassadors to journey across the country in a national youth road trip to encourage the Australian government to increase foreign aid.

The ‘Zero Seven’ road trip culminated in a landmark event where a historic display of support for Make Poverty History was projected onto the sails of the Sydney Opera House.

Never before in history has a youth campaign achieved such a feat, and this amazing display captured the imagination of the millions of people around the world who caught sight of the moment through international media. This moment marked the finale of the ZEROSEVEN Road Trip.

I volunteered my services as a photographer, capturing portraits of the 700 young ambassadors and other volunteers with their portraits being used in the final artwork.
